how it works?

We each carry in our DNA a series of indicators that provide information about our ancestry. This information is passed from generation to generation and can tell a profound story about where we come from, and highlight our connections to modern-day Africa.

Your DNA

Depending on which test you purchase, we analyze either the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that you inherited from your mother, the Y chromosome that men inherit from their fathers or autosomal DNA that you inherit from both parents. A simple swab from inside your cheek is all we need to begin the process.

Your Family Tree

The genetic information we extract remains unchanged across every branch of your family tree, forming an unbroken link through generations. In essence, we uncover the distinctive fingerprint that you share with your ancestors, from parents and grandparents to great-grandparents and beyond, along a single lineage.

Your History

Utilizing pioneering genetic scientific methods, we look closely for markers or mutations that indicate where in the world your ancestry is found. If your genes indicate Africa, we then compare them to the world’s largest database of African lineages to determine the present-day African country and ethnic group with which you share maternal or paternal ancestry.

What you get with your test

Your mtDNA has power. It provides energy for every cell in your body. mtDNA also has a series of unique markers that tell a profound story about you and your family.

FAQs

Your DNA is completely confidential.

African Ancestry is a 100% Black-owned business founded in 2003 by Dr. Rick Kittles and Gina Paige. You can learn more about us here.
Ninety-two percent (92%) of the people who take this test receive an African result. There is an 8% chance that your result will not be African.
Very few, if any, African Americans are 100% African. During the period of slavery in the Americas, white men (slave traders, slave owners, etc.) often fathered children with enslaved women. Their offspring then had both African and European ancestry. This means that the descendants of the offspring will have a European branch in their family tree. There is an 8% chance that your maternal ancestry result will not be African.Read more about why here.

Status of RECEIPT

Have the MatriClan Test Kit swabs been received. I mailed at Post Office in DC but forgot to photo the USPS label. I sent from Post Office on Half St. SW near DMV on 02/27/2023. Please advise. I am concerned.

The celebration on 02/21/23 was great. The merchandise I purchased is fine but am not sure about AA receiving the actual mailed test kit swabs from me. Please advise.
Finally, I strongly dislike the singular use of my first name. Hence, my name used to register was/is G.Dewey ....

My Test Kit

The test was easy & the results is impressive. I am looking to get a better line-up on the spacing of my name on my certificate. I have not gotten the call that I was supposed to get concerning this matter.
