About African Ancestry

Founded in 2003 by Dr. Rick Kittles and Gina Paige, African Ancestry is the world leader in tracing maternal and paternal lineages of African descent having helped more than 750,000 people safely re-connect with the roots of their family tree. With the industry’s largest and most comprehensive database of over 30,000 indigenous African DNA samples, African Ancestry determines specific countries and specific ethnic groups of origin with an unrivaled level of detail, accuracy, and confidence.

Our Purpose

We are here to help transform the way Black people view themselves and Africa. We use DNA to reconnect Black people to their present-day African country and ethnic group of ancestry. Our vision is to reconnect every person of African descent in every part of the African Diaspora to their specific African roots.

Our Culture

From science to data analytics, operations to marketing, we collaborate cross-functionally to make learning fun and our work purpose-driven. Working at African Ancestry is like working in a reality TV show version of a Toni Morrison or Octavia Butler novel. Whether it’s starting the day with morning community huddles or representing your peoples progress during weekly culture cyphers, we create an environment that is both collaborative and open to individual innovation.

Every day we work to embody the following values:

  1. Have a high standard of Excellence
  2. Celebrate Pride, Honesty and Integrity
  3. Work Hard and Work Smart
  4. Keep Customer-Focused (Africa was born in them)
  5. Keep Community-Focused (Inclusivity, Presence, Contributions, Service)
  6. Cultivate and Maintain Relationships (Customers, Suppliers, Team)
  7. Build and Support Black Businesses

FAQ

What does African Ancestry look for in team members?

We search all around the world for the best scientists, operators, story tellers, marketers, designers, and other talented people who are passionate about our mission and want to use their expertise to help reconnect Black people to their present-day African country and ethnic group of ancestry.

Where is African Ancestry office located?

Our home office is in Washington DC, and the vast majority of the company works here and also remotely.

I applied online. What’s the next step?

If the team is interested in moving forward, we’ll aim to reach out within two weeks of submitting your application.

What’s the interview process?

Our hiring managers review each application that is submitted. If the submission is submitted without a critical document, we provide each applicant an opportunity to resubmit. Our team replies to every application and reaches out to selected candidates for the next steps.

During the interview process, you will have the chance to speak with people from various backgrounds and levels within our organization. Our final interview step is a half-day interview, where you will get to interact with people across various roles and functions within the company.

Our interviews are interactive and typically include a project or set of tasks relevant to your role (ex. writing and presentation exercises for marketers, data analysis and scenario planning for people managers, design exercises for designers, customer inquiry and problem-solving for everyone, etc.).

The interviews are designed to focus on learning how our candidates’ react and reflect. We know interviews can be stressful, so we do our best to make candidates feel welcome and comfortable at every step of the process.

During COVID-19, all interviews are currently conducted remotely via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. For certain interviews, screen sharing may be involved.

I applied for a role and was not selected. Can I reapply?

You are welcome to apply again for any role for which you see a good fit. Most successful re-applicants usually wait six months to a year, so they can improve their skill set, take on new challenges, and have something new to share.

What is African Ancestry’s office policy due to COVID-19?

We are primarily remote in 2021. Given that we now have a widely available treatment and vaccine, in-person meetings as needed are a requirement of each role. Right now, the earliest possible date we may start returning to in-office work is 2022.
